Frequently Asked Questions About Living on Your Own
|
How can I find a roommate if I’m new to Towson?
Created specifically for off-campus
students, the university has set up a system to help students find
others who are looking for an apartment or have a room for rent. The
list is updated frequently and can be found
here.
Why does TU need to know my address?
While many students are hesitant to give
the university their local address, the logic behind the policy makes
sense. The main reason TU wants your local address is to make sure your
information remains safe and secure. If you would like to view the

Can my complex really surprise inspect my apartment?
This may seem like a tricky way of allowing
your parents to surprise you when you least expect it and tell you to
clean up your house or leave, but it actually is a policy practiced by
many rental agencies. The best practice to have is to clean regularly
and you won't have a problem. The complex only wants to know that your
not trashing their property.
What are my rights as a renter?
You might be surprised at the rights you
have as a renter. It is a good idea to know your rights in whatever area
you move into because you never know when a dispute will pop up. To arm

What is subletting?
Subletting an apartment while school is out
is a common college practice. But, what is subletting? In its most
simple form it means to rent out the room you are renting to someone
else while you are away.
Can I sublet my apt if I move out before the lease
has ended?
This answer is neither yes nor no.
Subletting in the apartment world is frowned upon because someone other
than the leaseholder is living in the space. Some apartment complexes
have a clause in their lease that prohibits subletting, while others
simply go by the policy "don't ask. don't tell." If you decide to
sublet, make sure it is someone who will pay the rent. Otherwise, both
of you are "evicted" but only your credit score is trashed.
I need to make rent. Where can I find a job?
Many college students living off-campus
find themselves in need of jobs at some point in time. The Towson
Towerlight
newspaper offers a classified section twice a week and online to job
seekers. If you don't have any luck with the local classifieds, check
monster,
careerbuilder
and workbaltimore.
