Teen superstar Miley Cyrus played to a sold out “paperless”
concert at the Verizon Center in Washington D.C. on Nov. 3 with the
assistance of headliner band Metro Station.
In its biggest experiment to date, Ticketmaster went
“paperless” for Cyrus’ Wonder World Concert Tour in hopes of
reducing ticket scalping, a problem that plagued Cyrus’ previous
tour in 2008 according to an article on Billboard.com. Ticket
purchasers must show a valid form of identification and the same
credit card used to purchase the tickets in order to gain entry to
the show according to Ticketmaster.
“It’s a little nerve racking not to have a physical ticket,”
said concert attendee Sandra Clausen, a Towson University senior.
“The whole ‘paperless’ concept is good, it’s just weird to have to
go through all this security to see a 17-year-old.”
Aside from the “paperless” aspect of the tour, which kicked
off in Porland, Ore. on Sept. 14, Cyrus’ designed her latest tour to
motivate young people to “Get UR Good On.” The organization, created
by Cyrus in connection with Youth Service America, is aiming to
educate and engage young people to make the world a better place and
“literally go hug a tree,” said Cyrus.
“Every little thing we do has the potential to make the world
a better place to live in,” said Cyrus at the show. “This is our
time to make tomorrow way better than today.”
Hollywood, Calif. based band Metro Station is the sole
headliner for the tour. Members of the band include Cyrus’ older
brother Trace Cyrus and teen actor Mitchell Musso’s older brother
Mason Musso. The pop/rock band’s hits include songs: “Kelsey,”
“Control,” “Seventeen Forever” and “Shake It.”
Band frontrunner Trace Cyrus made it clear to the audience he
is “Miley’s older brother” by repeating himself a dozen times in his
half-hour long set. Cyrus, hot from singing and jumping up and down,
took his shirt off after the first song and did not put it back on
until he introduced his younger sister to the stage.
“I’ve never heard any of Metro Station’s music before
tonight, except for ‘Shake It,’” said Clausen. “I don’t like their
music because I don’t think I’m the audience they are trying to
reach,” said 23-year-old Clausen. “The band’s sound seems to be
driving at captivating a 12-year-old.”
The Wonder World Tour, presented by Wal-Mart, launched a new
clothing and accessory line with Cyrus and fashion designer Max
Azira in August. Promoters of the line were available during the
show in the District of Columbia to take photo-shopped images of
concert attendees with Cyrus herself. After the show, those who got
their picture taken could go to walmart.com to view and purchase the
photo to print and download. Taking a photo herself, Clausen
excitedly viewed her photo after the show and was “sorely
disappointed” when she found herself with huge darks spots as event
workers placed her too close to the green screen.
American Express hosted a ticket pre-sale from June 10-12 and
the public could purchase tickets beginning June 13. Tickets ranged
in price from $39.50 to $79.50.
London, England will host the final show of the 45-show tour
on Dec. 29. The final U.S. show will be in Miami, Fla. on Dec. 2.
